Men's Sweaters

Men's sweaters have undergone quite the makeover over the past few decades. While there was once little variety in terms of pattern and fit, there is now a diverse array of sweaters on the market to suit every occasion.

Despite popular belief, sweaters can work well for the office. Paired with the right pair of pants and shirt, a classic sweater can look formal enough for a day at the office. Sweaters also work well for casual wear around the house or on a weekend outing.

The first thing to consider when purchasing a sweater is the fit and neck. You want to select a sweater that looks fitted, but still leaves room for a shirt or t-shirt underneath if you want or need to layer.

You also want to consider what kind of neck to go for. Different necks suit different people and also different occasions.

First, you have the turtleneck. These kinds of men's sweaters look good with a pair of jeans for wear around the house on the weekend. They can also look a bit dressier if paired with some more formal pants, though they shouldn't replace the standard shirt and tie for an important meeting. Turtlenecks aren't really suited to people with very short necks.

Polo neck sweaters have a raised collar. They are most appropriate for casual wear, though you can pair them with a suit jacket and pants for less formal workday wear.

The two types of sweaters you are probably most familiar with are v-necks and crew necks. Crew neck sweaters have a round neckline whereas v-necks have (as the name implies) a v-shaped neckline. Depending on the color, style and pattern of these sweaters, they can be worn under a suit for work wear. What is great about both of these types of sweaters is that they never go out of fashion. Worn with or without a shirt underneath, they look classic and go with many different kinds of looks.

Then there's the old standby - the cardigan. These can look fashionable if done right, though the danger is always selecting a sweater that is too boxy or big.

When shopping for men's sweaters, you also want to consider color. It is best to have the majority of your sweaters in neutral tones. This way they go with many different outfits. You can add color through a shirt or tie, rather than through the sweater. Basic black, gray or navy sweaters will give you the most wear, though you do want to spice up your wardrobe with the addition of a few more colorful sweaters.
